We purchased 3 18" wide cabinets from Kraftmaid through Home Depot to set up a corner desk unit off our kitchen. We took in one of our kitchen cabinet doors to get as close of a match as possible on color.

Three small cabinets cost us over $1200 which we were OK with at the time. We were told by Home Depot reps that these were top quality cabinets! As soon as we unpacked the cabinets we noticed right away that they were at least 2 shades darker than what we had requested! Home Depot was no help, so my wife called Kraftmaid.

No help there and at least a bit rude to her! The guy simply stated that Kraftmaid is not responsible if the color is a "little off". "It's just the characteristics of the wood", he said. Now, as someone who spent a good bit of time as a professional wood finisher I know that is not true.

Using basic stains by Minwax and other companies I can match just about any shade needed. Also, as soon as I finish unpacking the cabinets, I notice that the side panels are constructed ONLY of MDF (or particleboard) that is barely 1/2" thick!!! After much discussion and NO HELP from Home Depot or Krafmaid, my wife and I felt like we were stuck with them and needed to get them in place. We didn't have time to mess around.

We decided to re-finish them ourselves (paint actually since the veneer is too thin for any sanding) and install them. Being very aware of the horribly cheap construction of the side panels, I was extremely careful with how I handled them. Even so, while leveling them the bottom, rear corner of one of the sides crumbled just because it is flimsy MDF! I could go on and on about this.

This is one of the biggest consumer "rip-offs" I have ever had to pay for! Please do yourself a favor and avoid Kraftmaid Cabinets!

We are also paying off our Home Depot card and are resigning ourselves to stop shopping there as well. Along with these horrible cabinets we're stuck with, we have had several problems with appliances bought from them!

Reason of review: Bad quality.

Monetary Loss: $1200.

Preferred solution: Price reduction.

So you took in a door that had turned color/darkened as it aged (which all wood does, it's a natural occurrence) and matched it to a sample door that had likely done the same thing. The designer should have made you aware of this and obtained a fresh sample for you to look at.

You received the standard particle board box construction, plywood is an option that should have been made available to you. It sounds like most of your bad experiance was related to your designer.

No, but I did in the past.

Seems it was your choice to have signed off on cabinetry that was comprised of MDF, why not ask for all plywood?
